EU ambassador visits ARJ

On 2nd May a delegation of European diplomats led by Ambassador Nicola Bellomo visited the association and interacted with journalists and media specialists.

On 2nd May a delegation of European diplomats led by Ambassador Nicola Bellomo visited the association and interacted with journalists and media specialists. The meeting, part of events to mark World Press Freedom day 2019 was attended by among others Cleophas Barore the chairman of Rwanda Media Commission (Media Self-Regulatory Body), Peacemaker Mbungiramihigo the Executive Secretary of the Media High Council, and Albert Baudoin Twizeyimana of Pax Press.
After a tour of the Press House by ambassador Bellomo, in opening remarks said that; "over the years, EU has supported activities involving media in particular to protect its independence and building capacity by generating these kinds of exchanges and opportunities to learn from each other".
The main discussions followed presentations by 5 media leaders who recently completed a one month fellowship at the Danish Union of Journalists funded by the European Union. These are Edmund Kagire of RMC, Ingabire Egide of ARFEM, Uwizeyimana Louise of RMU, Ngabirano Olivier of Editors Forum and Muganwa Gonzaga of ARJ. The journalists highlighted the big differences in the media environment in Denmark compared to Rwanda.
Peacemaker Mbungiramihigo highlighted the achievements in the media sector in Rwanda following the reforms since 2011 that led to law changes in 2013.
Among the diplomats was the deputy head of mission German Embassy and diplomats from Sweden, Holland, France, Switzerland, UK among others.
