Rwanda marks WPFD

Published on: 16-05-2019

To mark World Press Freedom day in Rwanda, two events were held by the journalists community at the Rwanda Journalists Association offices in Kigali. On Thursday 2nd May a number of diplomats led by the head of the European Union delegation in Kigali Ambassador Nicola Bellomo interacted with media leaders about the state of media freedom and the available support. The diplomats also listened to presentations from the medial leaders who recently concluded a month long fellowship in Denmark hosted by the Danish Union of Journalists.
On 3rd May, an event organized in conjunction with the Pax Press, ARJ, Rwanda Media Commission and the association of local governments (RALGA) saw an open discussion about on “Improving Access to Information for Free Press and Good Governance”. The penal included Ladislus Ngendahimana, Emmy Kajangana from the Office of the Ombudsman, Gonzaga Muganwa from ARJ and Anne Niwemwiza a presenter at KT Radio, moderated by veteran journalist Akimana Latifa.
There was extended debate on press freedom with journalists voicing different opinions on whether the raking by Reporters without borders reflects the actual situation on the ground. Government representatives strongly rejected the raking of 154 out of 180 countries globally, saying the Rwanda Media Barometer produced by the Rwanda Governance Board was more accurate. The barometer scores press freedom at 81%.
