Development Journalism Awards 2015

The Rwanda Governance Board and Rwanda Journalists Association call for submissions for the 3rd Edition of the Development Journalism Awards. 22 winners will be announced and awarded on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, 3rd May 2015.

The Award Categories are:

1. News Coverage award

The journalists or media outlets shall submit a sample of news story to demonstrate their coverage of news as a core journalistic responsibility. This concerns any reports without particular emphasis to style or type but considering the core principles of journalism. Four winners will be awarded in category reflecting various media forms i.e. print, online, radio and television.

2. Investigative Journalism award

The category recognizes the ability of journalists to bring to scrutiny issues that would otherwise be undisclosed through deep investigation of a topic of interest. The ability to bring out the truth, new information, analysis of data and impact will be considered. A journalist or a media team will submit a story or series of stories to compete for this category. Four winners will be awarded in category reflecting various media forms i.e. print, online, radio and television.

3. Talk-show of the Year award

Specific to radio and television, this award recognizes the best talk-shows over the last year. Entrants shall submit a profile of a talk-show indicating regularity, time of broadcast, hosts and a CD/ DVD with a recording of one best episode of the talk-show. Five talk-shows reflecting both radio and television will be awarded in this category. The public will be involved in choosing the winners.

4. Video and Photo Journalism Award

This category awards the best journalist and camera person producing the best photo/ videos that tell a story. Submissions should be made of pictures in print or digital form indicating publications where they appeared. For videos, the submission should be in DVD accompanied with file indicating which TV station it was broadcast.

5. Feature articles , Documentary, Magazine award

This category considers the in depth coverage of an issue including background research, interviews, analytical substance and good presentation. It applies for print, online, radio, TV / multimedia categories. Four winners will be awarded in category reflecting various media forms i.e. print, online, radio and television.

6. Lifetime Achievement award

Instead of submitting journalistic work, media practitioners or others shall nominate journalists who have been in the profession for a considerable period of time whose work, dedication, integrity, skill and service in the profession deserves to be recognised. One journalist will be recognized in this category.

7. Journalist of the Year award

From the winners in the above first five categories, the judging panel shall determine the overall winner among the submissions to be awarded this accolade. There will be one winner in this category.

SUBMISSION CRITERIA

1. Contestants should be practicing journalists working for media houses registered in Rwanda;

2. Articles or broadcast stories should be submitted in English, French or Kinyarwanda;

3. Eligible works must have been published or aired between October 15, 2013 and February 28, 2015;

4. Journalists are required to submit the title, date of publication and the publishing media outlet of articles or broadcast stories produced within a period mentioned above. The authenticity of the articles/publications should be verifiable by the Judging panel.

5. Entries should not be submitted in more than one category.

6. Each broadcast entry must be on a separate CD and/or DVD in a readable format;

7. Contestants for print and online categories should submit a hard copy of their articles;

8. Contestants from online media should also submit the link to access their articles;

9. For print and online categories, only byline journalists will be awarded;
